2017 International Airway Management Society (IAMS) Training Course (Shanghai) & Contemporary Anesthesiology Forum of Ophthalmology-Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery was held on March 31-April 4, 2017 in the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China. More than fifty specialists of airway management all over the world and no less than 150 trainees came to this workshop.

On the first day of the meeting, video broadcast was used for clinical observation, including laryngeal mask anesthesia for pediatric patients, awake intubation, management for emergence after tonsillectomy, supraglottic jet oxygenation and ventilation (SJOV). Senior anesthesiologist also shared their experience in anesthesia management for tracheal foreign body removal and papilloma.

Plenary meeting held on the second day was hosted by Pro. Huafeng Wei and Prof. Wenxian Li. Dr. Anil Patel, president of Difficult Airway Society (DAS) and co-author of new DAS difficult airway management guideline, made a keynote speech entitled “Difficult Airway Society (DAS) new guidelines for management of unanticipated difficult intubation in adults”. The debate among world-famous lecturer and domestic professors were the most welcomed part of the meeting. The debate topic included the necessarily of mask ventilation test before using muscle relaxants on anesthesia induction, the superiority of video laryngoscopy, the universality of awake fiberoptic intubation for all high risk difficult airway management and the uniqueness of scalpel-bougie cricothyroidotomy technique for management of emergent difficult airway.

Hands-on workshop on the last day was divided into seven groups: videolaryngoscope airway management devices, supraglottic airway devices, jet ventilation airway management devices, emergent surgical airway devices, fiberoptic intubation devices, ultrasound devices on airway management and rigid laryngoscope and special airway management endotracheal tube and catheters. Video, poster, slides and product presentation attracted every trainee and helped to improve the overall quality of the workshop.
